In my story, Gerda and the Darkness, Gerda is befriended as a young child by the Darkness. The villagers don’t understand — but, when raiders threaten their existence, it’s Gerda and the Darkness who save the day.
Excerpt from Gerda and the Darkness
“I’m Darkness,” it said when they first met, deep in a cave Gerda was exploring. “Let’s be friends.”
It wasn’t really a voice, of course. Even at ten, Gerda understood that, but she could hear it, just the same.
“Darkness isn’t a person,” she protested. “Darkness is just when there’s no light.”
“That’s not real Darkness,” the voice said. “I’m real Darkness. Are you afraid of me?”
Gerda thought about that. Everyone she knew was scared of the dark, especially when it came with the cold and didn’t go for months. They huddled in their farmhouses and built the fire up, hardly daring even the cross the short stretch of moor to their nearest neighbour. She’d never been frightened, though. Even if she couldn’t see, she could hear and smell and feel. What was there to fear?
“No,” she said. “Why do you want to be friends with me?”
“Because I’m alone,” said the Darkness.
